SHARON
HIMES
Sharon
Himes
is a long time resident of the Eastern Shore of Maryland and
interested in the natural and cultural heritage of the Chesapeake
Bay region.
She writes articles,
online classes and demonstrations on art history and art techniques
for the ArtCafe
Artists Network.
She writes about nature and Woodland
Seasons for
on and offline publications. A well known artist in the region,
she paints watercolors of the nearby wildflowers and waterways
from her studio.
In 1983 she published
an illustrated map of the Chesapeake Bay in a hand colored limited
edition. Several years later she published a full color signed
edition of another map of the Chesapeake. Drawing maps has been
pastime since childhood and she researched hundreds of antique
and contemporary maps to trace the story of Henry Norwood.
When Furnace
Town Historic Site near Snow Hill Maryland wanted a mural for
the new visitor center, Himes designed a modified map as a birds-eye
view of the area in 1830 when the iron furnace was at its height.
The completed eleven by eight foot mural includes hundreds of
figures illustrating many of the activities taking place in a
busy company town. Children love to look at all the details,
from men making charcoal for the furnace, to children playing
games or bringing water from the spring.
Himes is an amateur
historian with the freedom and enthusiasm of an amateur to follow
her curiosity wherever it leads. Her interest in finding out
more about Henry Norwood, a frequent footnote in local history
books, led to the creation of Cavalier's Adventure.
Born in Washington
DC, Sharon Himes went to college at Fairmont State in West Virginia
where she studied theater and art. She lives near Salisbury,
Maryland.
